It is not known where or when she was born.
William 1st Lord Borthwick (d. about 1485-6) married as his second wife, presumably after 21st Nov 1458 (date of the Marriage Grant), a widow, this Mariotta Hoppringle. It is unclear if that is her maiden name or the surname of her first husband, bit it is probably her maiden name. By a charter under The Great Seal of Scotland of 14th January 1548/9 (no.667) The Lord Borthwick was granted the lands of Glengelt which Mariotta de Hoppringle resigned to him in her pure widowhood. It is also shown that she brought to her marriage the lands of Collilaw. She was still living at the end of 1473 and may have been quite young when her first husband died.[1]
