Biography

Dessie was born on Apr 8th 1930 to parents Thomas Lafayette Horn (1890-1959) [1] and Mary Viola (Black) Horn (1902-1946) [2]. Dessie Horn married Morris Elvis Dunn Sr. (1920-1976) in Calhoun County, MS on Nov 28th, 1948. To this marriage was born two children, Jerry Dunn, and Thomas Dunn. She raised his three children, Elvis Dunn Jr. , Linda Carol (Dunn) Smithson (1944-2018) , and Annie Mae (Dunn) Keeton (1946-2006) from a prior marriage with Leila Mae (Jenkins) Dunn (1923-1946), as well as cared for her mother in law, Annie Pearl (Melton) Dunn (1890-1990) until her death in Jan 1990. Dessie had numerous health problems herself, but lived at home and cared for herself until abt a year before her death. Between hospital stays and the Bruce Long Term Care facility, and occasional day visits to her house for a few hours, her life was a full life doing the things she enjoyed outside which included taking care of her yard, flowers and garden. Dessie was known as the dedicated active member and the official "card sender" of Concord Baptist Church , sending cards to the sick, bereaved, and acknowledging birthdays of her family and members of Concord Church. Because of the COVID 19 Virus outbreak, her family wasn't able to spend time with her personally after the first week in March, 2020. The nursing home was locked down, and no visitors were allowed, the family visited with her through the window and face timed the nurse so they could talk to her after hip replacement surgery and her return back to the Bruce LTC Facility. Dessie passed from this life on May 20, 2020 and was interred in Concord Cemetery, located in Calhoun County, MS. [3]
