Joseph was born in 1847. Orphaned by the age of two years old, he was raised by a neighboring farmer, John Dukes with whom he lived for the next 24 years. John Dukes gifted him with an 80-acre farm in Milton, Wood County and this was the home for Joseph and his family. His first wife Elizabeth died in 1877 leaving a child, J.E. born September 21, 1876. Joseph remarried in 1877, and had a child, Candace with her. In 1891, Joseph sold the farm and moved to Bowling Green where he had purchased a farm rich in oil. He used the proceeds for various real estate investments. He passed away about 1920.
