Biography

John HORN [Horn-7467] son of James HORN [not yet researched] and Anne INNES [not yet researched]

  • was born on 20 Mar 1800 at Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
  • John married Margaret Bower [not yet researched] daughter of [not yet researched] and [not yet researched] on 24 Apr 1817 at Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
The children from this marriage were:

  4. William HORN [not yet researched] born on 20 May 1825.

Presumably Margaret BOWER [not yet researched] died before 1836, as

  • John married Isobel ANDERSON [Anderson-60458] daughter of James ANDERSON [Anderson-60429] and Isobel ADAMSON [Adamson-3436] on 13 Aug 1836 at Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
  • He was living with his 2nd wife, children, sister-in-law & widowed mother-in-law at Overwillans, Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland in the 1841 census,
  • was living with his 2nd wife & children at Mosstown, Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland in the 1851 census,
  • was living with his 2nd wife & children at Upper Willans, Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland in the 1861 census,

Research Notes

Oddities raise a good many questions, some needing the purchase of images from Scotlandspeople, if even available, in order to understand.

  • I can't find either a birth index relating to Margaret BOWER on Scotlandspeople using: Bower*, beginning with Marg, 1785-1803 or a death index using: Horn*, beginning with Marg, 1825-1836, but the 1841 census seems to support a previous marriage.
  • Supposedly ages greater than 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 in the 1841 census, but that doesn't account for the younger children in 1841 not being 10 years older on the 1851 census, particularly the differences for John and James.
  • 1841 census has 2 apparent sons named Alexander. I am assuming the age 15 is from John's 1st marriage, i.e. Alexander born on 17 Jun 1823, but I can't account for the one who is age 10.
  • 1841 census also shows Isobel, age 5 and John, age 2. I can't find a birth for either.
  • 1841 census shows James, age 4 months. I assume his is the 26 Jan 1841 birth and that he died as there is another James born 06 Feb 1843. I couldn't find a death record index entry for the 1st James.
  • 1861 census shows a daughter Jessie, but she (same Jessie?) is shown as granddaughter in 1871 with a different birthplace.
  • John's 1st marriage has sons named John, Alexander and George. Those 3 names are again used for sons of his 2nd marriage.
  • Alexander and George of the 1st marriage have birth dates 20 days apart. I am assuming they were twins and that Alexander died before being baptized and the the 7 Jul 1823 date was George's christening date.
