James Horn and Marrion Meggett were from The Barony Parish [Glasgow], Lanarkshire, Scotland where Marion’s family, the Meggetts, had lived for at least 150 years. James had been a soldier for an unknown period of time, but more recently had been a weaver. James and Marrion were married on May 5, 1807, James enlisted in the Stirlingshire Militia on 22 Oct 1807. They were the parents of Elisabeth, born in Apr. 3, 1808, Alexander, born Aug. 1, 1813, and James, born Oct. 20, 1815. They had signed on as members of the Abercrombie Street-Trans Atlantic Bridgeton Society. James was originally leader of this group preparing to go Canada. They sailed on July 13, 1820, from Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, with their three children on the ship Brock. She arrived in Quebec on Aug 20, 1820.
When they settled, initially James selected East lot, con 1, Lanark Township. This land did not suit him and he soon moved on to lot 15, con 2 back of Hopetown. The 1834 report noted that he had 30 acres cultivated and the rest was lake. This is known as Horn Lake.
Additional children were born at Hopetown: Robert Downie, Sept 22, 1821; Donald, 1822; Margaret, Sept 29, 1824; Thomas, Jun 18, 1826 and Marrion, Jun 6, 1829.
