Biography

b. 15 Feb 1806, third son of Thomas Horne, scholar and lecturer at Oxford University and Master of Manor House school.

Alfred was a lieutenant in the British Army on his way to a posting in India when he met and married Mary Ann Dennis at Cape Town on 24 March 1827 when she and her father Major James Dennis were returning to India. They were married by a special license.

Alfred became ill with cholera in India and was rehabilitated to England to recover. He retired from the Army and was appointed a police magistrate in Chiswick.

Alfred and Mary together with their infant son emigrated from Leith to Hobart, Tasmania via Rio de Janeiro in 1831 on the barque Princess Augusta. They arrived on 22 Nov 1831. He presented a letter from the Colonial Office to Governor Arthur which secured him subsequent positions in the colony.

1832: appointed Stipendiary Magistrate for Circular Head in the far north-west of the colony.

1835: appointed police magistrate for Norfolk Plain and moved to longford

1837: resigned as Magistrate and managed the estate of Entally House at Carrick where he was injured moving a barge.

1840: purchased Bowerbank property outside Deloraine where they build the manor house (Bowerbank Mill).

1842: Arthur died in Launceston from pulmonary complications of his prior illness and injuries.

His widow, Mary was left with 3 sons and 2 daughters at Bowerbank which she managed, and assisted her sons in timber mills at Deloraine until her death in 1861. Mary was buried in the Horne family plot at St. Mark's Church cemetery in Deloraine.
