Biography

From http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=freeman1&id=I791 John Freeman, parents unknown, born about 1650, probably in England. He was in Lower Norfolk, VA (now the City of Chesapeake) as early as Oct. 1673. Married to Hannah ? prior to 1683/4 most likely in Lower Norfolk. John and his wife Hannah both died after May 15, 1711 and before May 18, 1711 in Norfolk Co., VA. He lived near the Western Branch of Elizabeth River, adjoining the Great Dismal Swamp, near the boundary with Nansemond Co., VA. John Freeman, who patented land in 1676 in Lower Norfolk Co., VA was father of John and William Freeman who moved to NC and also of a son Thomas Freeman, unmentioned by previous researchers, who remained in Norfolk Co., VA. See DNA project posted at: http://dna.carnicle.com/test.htm (2003) (Our John-mint green)

John married Hannah sometime prior to 1684. Her brother was a neighbor to John Freeman. She is the mother of his three known children.John and his wife died some time after May 15, 1710 when John was made the Administrator of William Wallis' estate and two of his children John and Hannah Wallis. They died before May 18, 1711 when the court bond out Hannah Wallis to Andrew Taylor because John Freeman and his wife had died.[1]

Research Notes

Johanna or Hannah is named in 1662 as orphan, and still under age, in a court action by grandmother.[2]

This fact alone proves that she was not the Johanna that married first a Llewellyn then a Herbert. Because John Herbert's step children are named in 1677 receiving inheritances, and count them, there are four children. One of them, named Edward Llewellyn, is noted in a later court appearance as being born in 1662. This proves that his mother is not the underage orphan Johanna Horne named in the 1662 court action.

The mother may be the goddaughter of the esteemed Johanna Yates and named in her will as such, Johanna Mortene.

Hannah and husband John Freeman take in John and Hannah Wallis, children of William Wallis. There may be a familial connection between Hannah and William Wallis.
