Biography

In 1525 William was granted a coat of arms and was appointed Wakeman of Ripon in Yorkshire, England. The arms granted in 1525:- Argent, 3 Bugle-horns, (2 over 1), Sable, garnished Or upon Baldricks of the same. The Ripon Wakemen originated as night-watchmen and became figures of civic importance over the centuries.

Argent means silver and was usually painted white. Sable means black. Or means gold. Baldricks are the straps by which the bugle-horns were carried.
