Queen of the Annual Wild Rice Festival, Deer River, Itasca County, MN.

Veronica (Roni or Ducky) Harder, 74, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017 after battling lung cancer for many years, in her home and in the loving care of her family. She was born Oct. 25, 1943 in Ball Club, MN. To Edward and Veronica Horner. She attended schools in Deer River and graduated from Deer River High School in 1961. While in school she was chosen queen of the annual Wild Rice Festival. After graduating from high school she attended Pierce Business College in Los Angeles, Calif. and earned an associate’s degree in accounting. Roni lived in California for about 20 years before moving back to Minnesota. She then went to work for Leech Lake Gaming, working at many positions before retiring in 2007. Roni was a proud member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe tribe. Roni was married to Glenn Harder on April 29, 1987 in Reno, Nev. In her younger years she enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing and ricing. She also loved to dance. Later in life she spent many hours in her flower gardens, taking trips to the west coast to visit her relatives in California and Washington and visiting many casinos. Roni was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jack. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Glenn, sons, Bradley Reymann of Deer River and Charles (Scott) Baden of Sacramento, Calif.; stepson, Bryan Harder, and his wonderful family of Dayton, MN; sisters, Joyce King of Albuquerque, N.M. and Jeanette Berschauer of Olympia, Wash; granddaughter, Lexie (Charlie) Rachunek and great-granddaughter, Brooklynn Serfling, of Coleraine, MN; plus many other loving relatives. Also thank you to Roni’s many friends for their prayers and help during her struggle. A memorial visitation will be held Friday, April 28, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River. Lunch will follow at the VFW Social Hall, Deer River. Arrangements by Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River and Bigfork, Minn.
