Biography

Early Life

Arthur Hornsby was born in Small Heath, Birmingham in 1912 to parents James Hornsby and Elizabeth Harvey.

He had four sisters Emily, Gertrude, Violet and Lilian plus a brother Albert. He also had two half sisters Elizabeth and Elsie May. His brother Albert died of rheumatic fever in 1931.

He lived with his family in Cooksey Road, Small Heath Birmingham. His mother Elizabeth died in 1929.

Marriage and Children

Arthur married Marjorie Collins daughter of Charles Collins and Alice Pearce in Birmingham in 1938.

They had the following children:

Janet Hornsby born in 1940. Married Clive Mole in c1962 and later John Woolley in 1973.

Christopher Hornsby born in 1946.

Celia Hornsby born in 1950. Married John Ferrier Boath in 1970.

Judith Hornsby born in 1953. Married David Nunn in 1971.

2nd World War

Arthur was in the REME engineers during the war. His army number was 14740624. He enlisted at Worcester in the territorial's in April 1944 and later transferred to the engineers.

He served in India and Burma from November 1944 to December 1945.

He had a rank of craftsman on his discharge in May 1946 due to physical infirmity due to arthritis of the spine.

Occupation

He worked in the BSA factory assembling motor cycles and also in a car assembly factory.

Later Life

Arthur was a quiet man but loved his family and liked to get out in his car and take them for drives at the weekend.

Death

Arthur suffered badly in his later life with arthritis. He died of cancer in Birmingham in 1978. His wife Marjorie died of old age in Birmingham in 2006.
