Biography

Birth & Baptism 1828 Thixendale & Wharram Percy

Francis Horsley was born in 1828 (probably at Riggs farm) in Thixendale, a small village in the Yorkshire Wolds, in the Wharram Percy parish near Malton . [1]

Francis was the son of Garton Horsley and his wife Sarah Stephenson.

Farmer's Son 1841 Huggate Glebe Farm

In 1841 Garton and Sarah Horsley are at Glebe Farm Huggate, with their family and living in four "boys" male farm servants and two girls Female Servants. There would also be farm labourers living out, and paid weekly. The family were one daughter, Ann 20+. four sons, Matthew 18, Francis 13. Garton 8 and Thomas 3. There was also Ann Horsley 70+ the farmer's widowed mother. The entire household were born in Yorkshire.

Francis had probably left school and would be farming alongside his father, but also learning to run a farm, supervising the "boys" and the day labourers, deciding which jobs were necessary and urgent and which could be left for slack periods away from planting and harvesting. At some point he decided this life was not for him and became a draper. Perhaps he was not physically fit enough for farming though he outlived all his siblings by 30 years.[2]

Draper's Assistant 1851 London

Francis Horsley b. Thicksendale Yorkshire is one of 18 Draper's Assistants who with 2 Porters fill an entire page of the 1851 Census at 9 Ludgate Hill, St Bride's, City of London [3] This is evidently part of the large and prestigious premises of Everington & Graham Indian Shawls etc.

Marriage 1859 Kensington

Francis Horsley married Mary Mallam in Kensington, London where he was an apprentice draper in 1859. [4] [5]

Widowed 1861 Leeds

Early in1861 (before the census) Mary Horsley dies in childbirth, though the baby, Frank Stephenson Horsley survives. This accounts for the hubbub in the household on census day. [6] [7] _

Above the Shop 1861 Leeds

In 1861 Francis Horsley is hard-pressed: He is a widower with a one month old son as well as a slightly older child Garton Horsley 1. Three visitors (one of them his youngest brother Thomas Horsley 23 and another a sister-in-law Clare Mallam 26) and two nurses are there to help him but he also has a shop to run with two assistants, two servants, a milliner and a dressmaker to direct. There are also three more assistants (male) an apprentice and a porter in the next property. [8]

Second Marriage 1867 Leeds

Francis Horsley married Jane Sadler in Leeds April 29 1867. [9]

Linen Draper 1871 Leeds

Francis Horsley is a Linen Draper in Leeds 1871 with his second wife Jane Sadler and three children. The presence of a nurse (not a nursemaid) is an indicator that a fourth child, Herbert is due, [10]

Widowed a Second Time 1873 Leeds

Jane (Sadler) Horsley dies aged 36 only six years after her marriage to Francis Horsley leaving him with four children age 6 or under, but he does not remarry as soon as is decent. [11]

Research

There was some evidence of a marriage about 1864 but this seems to have been an error.

Marriage 1864 Leeds

Francis Horsley married Sarah Ann Stephenson in Leeds 1864. This was probably a marriage of cousins as both his mother and paternal grandmother were called Stephenson before marriage. [15]

Widowed 1873 Leeds

Sarah Ann (Stephenson) Horsley dies aged

ALL OF THE SOURCES ON THIS SUPPOSED MARRIAGE AND
WIDOWHOOD SEEM TO BE MISSING.
