Francis Horsley was born in 1828 (probably at Riggs farm) in Thixendale, a small village in the Yorkshire Wolds, in the Wharram Percy parish near Malton . [1]
Francis was the son of Garton Horsley and his wife Sarah Stephenson.
In 1841 Garton and Sarah Horsley are at Glebe Farm Huggate, with their family and living in four "boys" male farm servants and two girls Female Servants. There would also be farm labourers living out, and paid weekly. The family were one daughter, Ann 20+. four sons, Matthew 18, Francis 13. Garton 8 and Thomas 3. There was also Ann Horsley 70+ the farmer's widowed mother. The entire household were born in Yorkshire.
Francis Horsley b. Thicksendale Yorkshire is one of 18 Draper's Assistants who with 2 Porters fill an entire page of the 1851 Census at 9 Ludgate Hill, St Bride's, City of London [3] This is evidently part of the large and prestigious premises of Everington & Graham Indian Shawls etc.
Francis Horsley married Mary Mallam in Kensington, London where he was an apprentice draper in 1859. [4] [5]
Early in1861 (before the census) Mary Horsley dies in childbirth, though the baby, Frank Stephenson Horsley survives. This accounts for the hubbub in the household on census day. [6] [7] _
In 1861 Francis Horsley is hard-pressed: He is a widower with a one month old son as well as a slightly older child Garton Horsley 1. Three visitors (one of them his youngest brother Thomas Horsley 23 and another a sister-in-law Clare Mallam 26) and two nurses are there to help him but he also has a shop to run with two assistants, two servants, a milliner and a dressmaker to direct. There are also three more assistants (male) an apprentice and a porter in the next property. [8]
Francis Horsley married Jane Sadler in Leeds April 29 1867. [9]
Francis Horsley is a Linen Draper in Leeds 1871 with his second wife Jane Sadler and three children. The presence of a nurse (not a nursemaid) is an indicator that a fourth child, Herbert is due, [10]
Jane (Sadler) Horsley dies aged 36 only six years after her marriage to Francis Horsley leaving him with four children age 6 or under, but he does not remarry as soon as is decent. [11]
Francis Horsley marries a third wife Jane Ann(e) Just in Leeds late in 1878, They will be together for over 20 years. [12]
In 1881 Francis Horsley is perhaps seen at his wealthiest in Leeds with his third wife and seven children between 20 years old and five days (the baby will be called Ethel): two visiting children and three servants (two domestics and a nurse). [13] .

In 1901 Francis Horsley 73 is the active proprietor of the Vane Arms Hotel , in Stockton on Tees, living on the premises with his third wife Jane Ann Just and their four children aged 12 to 21 as well as nine staff living in. [14]
Francis Horsley died in 1901 in the Stockton on Tees area in County Durham , probably at the Vane Arms Hotel , Stockton on Tees, his home and business, where he was succeeded by his widow Jane Ann to 1905 --- Sll from Nan.
There was some evidence of a marriage about 1864 but this seems to have been an error.
Francis Horsley married Sarah Ann Stephenson in Leeds 1864. This was probably a marriage of cousins as both his mother and paternal grandmother were called Stephenson before marriage. [15]
