Henry Horsley was born and baptised in 1831 in the village of Seaton Ross in the middle of Spalding Moor, in the East Riding of Yorkshire between the Derwent and the Yorkshire Wolds.
He was the son of Henry Horsley, a farm labourerer, and later a carrier and his wife Elizabeth.
Seaton Ross 1841 Father and Son
The elder Henry Horsley was an Ag Lab aged 40 or more, based at Rytham Gate in Seaton Ross. His wife,Elizabeth was much the same age as himself, and her mother Elizabeth Hodge 72 was also with them, Independent. The younger Henry aged 11 was one of his eight children. and all of these 11 were born in Yorkshire. [1]
Apprentice 1851 Holme on Spalding Moor
In 1851 young Henry Horsley 20 was a shoemaker's apprentice living with his master James Falkingham 48 in the middle of Holme on Spalding Moor, four miles west of his father in Seaton Ross. [2]
Marriage 1853 in Holme
At 22 Henry Horsley married Ann Calam, a young woman from Holme two or three years younger than himself. [3]
Holme on Spalding Moor 1861 Moor End
In 1861 Henry and Ann Horsley have set their base well away from the village centre where the obtrusive Holm rises out of the plain. Instead they are at Moor End at the southern end of the triangular village.. Henry's shoemaking business and his family seem well established, with four young children and an 18 year old apprentice to help with the shoemaking. [4]

In 1871 Henry Horsley was a cordwainer or shoemaker employing 1 boy. and living at Moor End in Holme on Spalding Moor with his wife Ann and eight children, most of them attending school: The eldest, William at 17 seems likely to be a student-teacher: Harrison Horsley is just five. [5]
Alfred Falkingham 18, Henry's apprentice shoemaker is surely a relative of his own master James Falkingham (see 1851).
Holme on Spalding Moor 1891 Moor End
By 1891 Henry Horsley the shoemaker of Holme on Spalding Moor is sixty years old. Ann is still with him as are four of his children, son Harrison 25 and three daughters, Vinnie 23, Julia 19 and Annie 15. [6]
Holme on Spalding Moor 1911 Moor End
Henry and Ann Horsley are moving into their eighties and the 58th year of their marriage at the census of 1911. They are now living alone at Moor End. [7]
Death in Holme 1918
Henry Horsley dies in Holme on Spalding Moor toward the end of 1918. He is 88. [8]
