Biography

Rupert was registered in 1906. He is the son of Albert Horsley and Ethel Cox. Rupert was born in Hartlepool on the 17 Dec 1905 and died on the 5 March 1988. He was educated at Winchester College from which he won an Exhibition to study History at Brasenose College Oxford. He was also taught art by R.M.Y Gleadow. At Oxford he gained a Blue at cricket and in his spare time studied art under Sydney Carline and Paul Nash. He was appointed as an Assistant Master at Wellington College Berkshire (1929-1966), but was told that they did not need History teachers, so was sent to Munich to learn German, and the Sorbonne to improve his French, and subsequently taught both for the rest of his teaching career. In 1933 the Cambridge University Press published his book 'A German Course' which was re-issued by them in 2016 . <ISBN 9781316612651> He became housemaster of The Murray early in his career - the youngest master ever to be put in charge of a house - and subsequently The Picton (1949-1961). Despite suffering two long bouts in hospital of polyneuropathy, totalling almost a year and a half, he continued to work, and retired from Wellington in 1966, moving to Oxford where he continued to teach languages at Lincoln, Brasenose and Oxford Brookes. Retiring for a second time in 1970 he spent the rest of his life either gardening or painting, holding numerous one man exhibitions of his watercolours up and down the country. He liked to paint outside, whatever the weather, and his favourite subjects were the Lake District, Devon/Cornwall, the North East, and Hampshire. He was a member of the Art Workers Guild. His ability to paint represented a victory over his earlier ill health, which caused total loss of feeling in his hands and feet. He had to re-learn to write, and to the end of his life continued to guide and steady his right hand with his left.
