Biography

Mary “Polly” Horton was born on 23 Nov 1819, in Anderson County, Tennessee, to Nathaniel Ananias Horton (1790-1846) and Malinda Atkinson (1801-1899). [1, 2]

The book, The Pariss Sims and Related Families 1765-1965, by Almon J. Sims, states, "The Youngblood family, originally of North Carolina, came to Wayne County from Rutherford County, Tenn.

"The Horton family, originally of North Carolina and of English ancestry, came to Wayne County out of Bedford Co., Tenn. Isaac Horton, the grandfather of Mary Horton was a Revolutionary War soldier with the troops of Virginia." (p. 44) [3]

Polly married Josiah Youngblood in 1836 or 1837. [2, 1] The couple's children included William George (b. 1837), Lydia Hanna Jane (b. 1844), and Marguerite Elizabeth (b. 1860). [3]

Mary "Polly" Horton Youngblood is found in the following US Federal Census records:

  • 1840 for Wayne County, Tennessee, as part of three white free persons (with her spouse and a male child under the age of 5) [4]
  • 1850 for Wayne County, Tennessee, with spouse Josiah, and children: William, Malinda and Lydia [5]
  • 1860 for County, Tennessee, Polly is listed as “Mary” (age 41), with spouse Josiah (age 42) and children Hannah J. (Hannah Jane, age 16), and Margarite (Margarite Elizabeth, age 5 months). [6]
  • 1870 for Wayne County, Tennessee, with spouse Josiah , and child, Hannah E., age 10 [7]

Mary died in Wayne County, Tennessee on 18 Dec 1879. [1, 2, 9] Medical records attribute her death to “dropsy of the heart.” [9]
