Biography

Thomas Horton allegedly born about 1638 in Springfield, Massachusetts, as son of Thomas Horton of Springfield and his wife Mary.

  • There are no records for a Thomas in Springfield during the correct timeframe; Birth; marriage; Death. In addition the marriage record of his mother to Robert Ashley does not support his existence. Widdow Horton and Robert Ashley marriage intention Aug. 7, 1641. She has 2 sons, one suckling and Jeremy age 3. The other proven son was John.[1]

The 1876 Horton Genealogy mentions the Springfield family in passing saying nothing of the immigrant Thomas' children.[2]

The Hortons in America[3] was published in 1929 and reprinted in 2006. It is from this we have the information on Thomas.

  • "Thomas Horton left three sons: Jeremiah, born 1636; Thomas born 1638; John, born 1640." and "The children of Thomas Horton are likely to have been scattered as they grew up and were found in other localities -- Braintree, Milton, Reheboth, Charleston, Dorchester and Templeton show records of Hortons ... "[3]
    • Thomas son of Thomas Horton and Mary Eddy[4], born 1638; married Sarah ______. Children:
      • John b. 1672 in Milton, Mass
      • Rachel b. 1674
      • Jonathan b. 1675
      • Thomas b. 1677
      • David b. 1670

A 1965 text by Carl Fisher says of the immigrnt: "Thomas had no other surviving children and NONE named Thomas Jr. The son Thomas given in Hortons in America and elsewhere is probably the son of Thomas of Milton. The Pynchon Court Records would have had a Thomas Jr. had such a child existed.[5]

Conclusion

It is obvious looking at the children of Thomas m. Sarah (listed above) that he is the same person as Thomas Horton of Milton and Rehoboth who died about 1716.

This disproven information [Horton-3209] is found in book/published genealogy and is wide spread on the internet.

Noted: The brothers/sisters attached to this profile [Thomas Horton-3209], are children of Mary Unknown Ashley. The children of Thomas of Springfield. Mary Unknown Ashley have no connection to Thomas of Milton. Thomas Horton-3209, born Springfield, 1638, as son on Mary Unknown Ashley an Thomas Horton of Springfield, should be a Disproven Existence profile.

Non-existent Thomas Horton b. 1638 Springfield, Mass. What to do with him?

If the information IS prevalent elsewhere, then I would keep the profile, documenting both why it is an error and also the source of the bad information. I would then process it (one week's notice on G2G) as a Disproven Existence profile. Once the week's notice has past, all links with other profiles would be severed. The fake Thomas would no longer appear in anyone's tree, but if someone tried to re-create it, they would (hopefully) discover it. answered 1 day ago by Jack Day G2G6 Pilot (224k points)

AS I researced, His questionable existence was verified. He actually is the Thomas that he keeps trying to get merged into.

This profile in typical Wiki fashion has morphed until he resembles someone else, which is why merges continue to be proposed. I am reverting him back to his somewhat questionable existence.

Horton-181 and Horton-3209 do not represent the same person because: There is no known documentation for connecting the two Thomas Hortons. Current research seems to be saying that they are two separate people. The conflicting info was pasted into Horton-3209, and should be removed.

There is no documentation to connect the two Thomas Horton's [Springfield vs Milton and Reboth] and following is the current theory. [Also note the children's names in each profile. I do not beleive there is documentation for a "Thomas Horton" born in 1638 Springfield, for that matter.]

"Thomas Horton, son of Thomas Horton the Regicide, is known as 'Thomas Horton of Milton & Rehoboth' and Barnabas' brother is known as 'Thomas Horton of Springfield' " http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~hortonfamilyhistory/genealogy/THOMAS%20HORTON%20-%20REGICIDE.html

Removing Thomas b. 1638 as the son of Thomas Horton who married Mary (Unknown) Ashley. No source to support this conjecture.

Horton-181 and Horton-3209 are not ready to be merged because: As far as i am aware there is no documentation for parents of Horton-181. Please provide said documentation.
