Biography

Notables Project
Jerome (Horwitz) Howard is Notable.

Curly Howard, born Jerome Lester Horwitz, is a national treasure. One of the most recognized Three Stooges, his comedy, based on vaudevillian humor, has stood the test of time. He remains immensely popular sixty years after his death.

Curly was one of five brothers born in Brooklyn, New York to immigrant parents of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry. Although never completing high school or taking acting lessons, Curly had a natural talent. His ability to ad lib was legendary and directors loved him for it. His first stage experience was as a comedic conductor for the Orville Knapp Band in 1928. Curly joined The Three Stooges in 1932, replacing his brother Shemp Howard. They went on to make many successful films. To this day you can still hear people imitate his trademark "Nyuck Nyuck Nuck", "Woob Woob Woob" or "Soitenly".

Jerome died of a cerebral hemorrhage on 18 January 1952 [1] and was buried at Home of Peace Memorial Park in East Los Angeles, California.[2]

Reference Notes

Some early movie publicity, like for "Men In Black", name him Jerry Howard instead of Curly.[3]
