Abraham was born about 1802-1803 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. His name has been misspelled many different ways: Hossflock, Horseflook, Hosaflook, Horsaflock, Hasaflook, Hoosaflook, Hassafluck, Housefluke, and my personal favorite: Horseflip. Hausenfluck may be the original spelling from his ancestors. Abraham has also been spelled Abram.

Abraham married Maria Elizabeth Lemmons on 8 Oct 1829. Yet another name in the records: Abraham H. Afluke married Elizabeth Lemons (another of her name variations) in Bath County, Virginia. They had 8 children, who also had name variations:

  1. Margaret E. HOSAFLOOK born 15 Jun 1830 inGreenbrier, VA
  2. Martha HASSEFLUTE born 18 Feb 1832 in Randolph, VA (Other Names in the records for her: Martha Horselipo, Martha Horaflosk, Martha Horsaflook, Martha Housaflock, and Martha Hosaflook)

  7. Barbara Ann HOSAFLOOK born in 1847 in Upshur, VA
  8. Rachel HOSAFLOOK born 11 Apr 1848 in Upshur, VA

Note that all references to VA above are now in West Virginia as the counties that separated from Virginia at the beginning of the war became part of West Virginia which became a State on June 20, 1863.

Abraham enlisted in the Union Army in the Civil War. He joined the 1st West Virginia Regiment Light Artillery and was assigned to the newly organized Battery E at Buckhannon in western Virginia on September 18, 1862. The Battery was known as the "Upshur Battery" due to the predominance of men from Upshur County who enlisted in its ranks. On his service records, it was stated he was 45 years old and a blacksmith. The math doesn't add up with his birth in 1803; he must have fudged on his age in order to enlist at the age of 59. His rank was Private throughout his service and he worked as an artificer which is a skilled mechanic in the armed services. There is no record of any injury during his service through the mustering out of his unit which disbanded at the end of the war on June 28, 1865.

His 3 sons, William, Henry and Andrew, also served in the Union Army during the war. Henry was one of the soldiers fighting in General William Avrell's Salem Raid and was captured and held at the Confederate Andersonville Prison at Camp Sumter, Georgia. He died there and is buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery.

After Abraham's service, he settled in Upshur, West Virginia and farmed his land. He is listed in the 1870 Census at age 70, as a farmer, living with his wife, a daughter and granddaughter. He passed on April 8, 1877 and was buried in Alton Cemetery, Upshur, West Virginia and his service to his county has been memorialized by a plaque and tombstone on his grave albiet misspelled as Horseflook.
