7911, Abraham J. Hostetler, 5th generation in the family of Jacob Hochstetler, son of Jonathan, 7910. Bedford, Ind., at death, was b. Nov. 22, 1818, in Washington Co., Ind., d. Nov. 24, 1899, and m. Feb., 1842, Margaret Newland.
Blacksmith, merchant, and editor and publisher. He was elected to the Indiana State Senate from Lawrence Co., and served from 1854 to 1858. He was elected to Congress from the 8th Indiana district, of which Bedford Co. was a part, and served from 1879 to 1881. He was a delegate in 1880 to the National Democratic Convention at Cincinnati, Ohio.

Bio: U.S. Congressman. He apprenticed to learn the blacksmith’s trade and later was successful in agricultural pursuits. Entering politics, he was a member of the Indiana State Senate, (1854-58). In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving until 1881. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in mercantile pursuits until his death.
