The following memorial notice was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Southern Argus, on 25 June 1885:[3]
In loving rememberance of the late Rev. John Hotham, who, for thirty years of unceasing fidelity, sustained the Pastorate of the Port Elliot Congregational Church. He entered into the rest that remaineth for the people of God on the 26th day of May, 1885. " He being dead, yet speaketh."
