"Craven Lynn Hottel, sixth and only child of Peter Hottel by his second m., b. near Corydon, Indiana on February 22, 1847, was educated in the community of his birth, then engaged in teaching before his entrance to Hartsville University, from which he graduated in 1872, receiving the degree of Ph.D. in 1874. While attending the University, he met Martha Ella Stewart, of Hartsville, b. Aug. 7, 1851. They were m. Oct. 22, 1872, Professor J. Woodbury Scribner, Pres. of the University, officiating. Professor Hottel taught in the public schools of Indiana. He was Superintendent seven years at Portland, seven years at Columbia City, and had just begun his tenth year at Argos when his death occurred.
"He belonged to a number of fraternities, had passed through all the degrees of the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges, and was active in the Christian Sunday school as Superintendent and teacher. Prof. Hottel taught his Bible class Sunday morning, October 25, 1914, and while at dinner was stricken with apoplexy. He d. at 10:30 that night."[1]
