John was a Friend (Quaker)

Biography

John Hough (c. 1740 - 1809) was the son of Joseph Hough Sr. and Elizabeth West.

On 31 Oct 1767 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John "Huff" married Ruth WILLIAMS[1].

He was a member of the non-Associators in 1775.

Thomas Meredith's parents, John and Charlotte Hough, in a will probated in 1809, wherein Charlotte's father, John Hough, named his son-in-law John Meredith, executor of his estate (Bucks Wills 1796-1825 87).

Thomas' s mother Charlotte Hough descended from a Quaker family who had immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1683. In fact, her great grandfather had been a friend of William Penn.

In birth records for Chester County, a John Meredith is listed as being born to Simon and Dinah Meredith. In fact, two John Merediths are registered to these parents--one in 1761 and one in 1776. Not only did Simon and Dinah have two Johns, but also two Graces and two Marys (Pennsylvania Births 135). Apparently, they were so determined to have a son John and a daughter Grace=names given to honor grandparents=that when the first name-bearer died, a subsequent child was given the same name. The second and surviving John was born in 1776, which would make him nineteen when Thomas was born, not an unreasonable age to father a first child. And Simon, a family name, seems a likely name for John's father.

According to the same record, a Simon Meredith was born in 1729 to a John and Grace Meredith. There was no Chester County record of the birth of this elder John Meredith, but ifhe was a father in 1729 and ifhe was the son of the Simon who immigrated in 1708, this John Meredith was probably born in Wales (Pennsylvania Births 136). 6

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Hough-3030 and Hough-907 appear to represent the same person because: John had a daughter Mary Hough, my ancestor, and married Ruth Williams on 24 Oct 1767
