Note NI1I was born in the Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena on February 19, 1938. I was raised and educated entirely in Pasadena, attending Lincoln, Madison, and Edison elementary schools, Eliot Jr. High School, John Muir High School and Pasadena Jr. College. I then went to Los Angeles State College, getting my B.A. degree in Philosophy in 1960. My only other claim to fame during those years was as a member of the swimming team at Pasadena Jr. College. Some of my teammates and I formed two relay teams that were ranked 7th in the nation. We were nominated to the Helms Foundation All American team in 1956. I did not have the same success at L.A. State, but I thoroughly enjoyed the two years that I played water polo and was on the swimming team. During those years I also coached a country club swimming team in the summer, winning several league championships.
I started my graduate school education at the University of Southern California while still attending L.A. State, transferring to the University of California, Berkeley in 1960 for one year. However, mainly because I could get room and board working as a dormitory supervisor at U.S.C. in Los Angeles, I transferred first to U.S.C., and then to the University of California, Los Angeles in 1961. I was enrolled full-time at U.C.L.A. as a graduate student until 1964 until I obtained my first teaching position at California State College, Fullerton. This delayed my progress toward the Ph.D., but I finally obtained it in 1967.
In 1966 I was offered a teaching position at the University of California, Santa Barbara, turning down job offers at Reed College and the University of Oregon. I taught there for six years, but failed to achieve tenure. I subsequently accepted a one-year position as a sabbatical leave replacement at Reed College, and the next year found a permanent position at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. I stayed there for six years, but Torre and I did not like living in the northern Virginia suburban area. I applied for and accepted a teaching position at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California, where I taught and chaired the philosophy department from 1979 until my retirement in 2001.
I met and married Torre Barbara Peterson in 1970. We were introduced by a mutual friend in Carmel, California. Shortly after we met, Torre offered to drive me to meet another friend (Ron Hathaway) with whom I was going on a camping trip in the Bridger National Wilderness of Wyoming. The offer led to her joining our camping expedition, and a proposal of marriage came soon after (although I cannot now recall who proposed to whom). Torre and I had what is perhaps the shortest wedding ceremony in history. We were married by Judge Joseph Lodge at his house in Santa Barbara. He and his wife Sheila (who later became mayor of Santa Barbara) had shoved all of the furniture back to the walls in their living room, in expectation of a large crowd. But we only brought my old friend Bill Forgie to stand as our witness. Although Judge Lodge was a bit perplexed at the lack of guests, he went ahead with the ceremony. We asked him to give us the shortest ceremony legally possible. He said that all that each of us needed to do was to answer "yes" to the question "Do you want to marry _____?" He asked me if I wanted to marry Torre and I immediately said "yes." He then asked Torre if she wanted to marry me and she started laughing. Judge Lodge said "that won't do -- you have to answer "yes" or "no." Torre said "yes," and we have been together ever sinc
We had one son, Joshua Justin Davis Houlgate, born in 1971. Josh was a delightful young child, full of joy and happiness. He showed an early gift for drawing and poetry. Josh graduated from California Polytechnic State University in 1995 with a degree in Social Sciences, specializing in Cultural Anthropology. However, he decided not to pursue that field as a career, and was enrolled in courses in real estate law and welding at our local community college at the time of his death. Josh's death in late 2007 (he was a victim of homicide) was the single great tragedy of our life. Torre and I think about Josh and miss him every moment of every day. At least we have our happy memories of our son and this sustains us one day at a time.

Hi Laurence. I am a direct descendent of the Houlgates . Please could you have a look at your profile Winson-6? She is my 4th gt grandmother. I have proposed a merge with Winson-152. Stephen Heathcote, the manager of that profile agrees it is a match. I initiated the merge but can't complete it as I'm not on the trusted list for either profile. Pease could you complete the merge if you agree? Thanks, Kay.
If you can add me to the trusted list for Elizabeth Ann (Unknown) Houlgate (abt.1842-1906) as looking to set last name at birth (or at least last name at marriage pending someone getting the actual marriage record)
I sent you a trusted list request for Waitstill Green-2658 a couple of weeks ago. She is a direct ancestor of my family. Would you please add me to her trusted list so I can keep informed of updates to her profile?
Thanks for your comment about Edward Chapman. I'm going to post another comment on his profile now - a comment with my plan of action. Then I will wait a few days before I move forward.
Laurence, do you happen to speak any other languages? Would you check out our languages template and add it to your biography? For example you might add
{{ Languages | en | fr-2 | ga-1 }}
to the top of your biography if you speak English natively, intermediate French and basic Irish, or you could use de-4 to specify near-native German or ru-1 for basic Russian, and so forth up to ten languages.
It really helps to know who speaks all the different languages used on WikiTree! If you only speak English, you're very welcome to use this text to make that clear:

Thank you for your message on my profile re linking Mary Boynton to her father. No need to worry as Sara (Stevens) Patton already linked them.

I would like to have this individual in my Watchlist to simplify running queries and being added to the Trusted List is the only way that I am aware of to do that (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Watchlist#Adding_and_removing_profiles).
