Biography

This biography is a rough draft. It was auto-generated by a GEDCOM import and needs to be edited.

Squire House was born on December 4, 1838 at Columbia, Herkimer, New York.[1] He served in the Civil War in Company E, 34th Infantry Regiment New York from May 1861[2] to June 1863.[3] He operated a grocery store at Jacksonburg, three miles west of Little Falls. In 1880 he was accused of being part of the conspiracy to steal the body of Harry Burill from a cemetery vault and hold it for ransom. This resulted in a hung jury. His lawyers had to sue House to make him pay his legal bill of $650. He married Sarah A. Bidleman in July 1894.[4]

Richfield Springs Mercury, 1918 'The Gen Herkimer Gun Club is contemplating the purchase of the Squire House property at Jacksonburg, which includes ten acres of land beautifully situated on the river front. It would be an ideal location for that purpose.
Obituary: Utica Harold-Dispatch, Thursday, June 12, 1902, Squire House-- Squire House, an old and much respected resident of Jacksonburg, died at his home this morning at 3:30 o'clock. Mr. House was taken sick Monday with appendicitis, and rapidly grew worse until the end came this morning. The deceased was born in the town of Columbia, this county, sixty-three years ago. He was the son of a prosperous farmer and lived on the farm with his father until quite young man. He then moved to Mohawk and from there to Jacksonburg, where he has since conducted the Canal grocery for the past thirty-five years. His first wife died many years ago. He married for his second wife Sarah Klock of Jacksonburg. He is survived by his widow and one son and daughter, Francis and Justus, both of whom live at Jacksonburg. Mr. House was a Democrat and has always been prominently connected with his party. He was a member of the Galpin Post, G. A. R. When the war broke out he was one of the first to go forth to fight for his country. He was one of the best known residents of the county; almost every man, woman and child enjoying his acquaintance. His death removes another one of the many prominent citizens whose deaths have occurred within the past few months. The funeral will be held Sunday at one o'clock from the late residence at Jacksonburg.
