Biography

Lots of misinformation on this James Houston (1737-1820) has been circulating. He was not the son of John Houston 1690-1754 and Margaret Cunningham 1690-1754, who arrived in PA in 1735, before removing to VA ca 1742 . Their son, James was born in 1715 Ireland and died abt 1736 in Ireland of consumption as stated in Book: Brief biographical accounts of many members of the Houston family by Rev Samuel Rutherford Houston 1806-1887. This James Houston (1737-1820) has no records connecting him to the immigrant, John Houston (1690-1754) He was also not the James Houston (1757-1840), who was a Rev War Vet/VA, the Sheriff of Greene Co TN, TN State Legislator, Senator and Court Magistrate who died in Blount Co TN. Policitcal career in noted his Rev War Pension file.


James Hughston/Houston was born 07 Jun 1737 and passed aft he wrote his will dated 18 Apr 1820 Greene Co TN. He was the son of John and Agness LNU (possibly Holme) Houston. His orgins are unknown at this time but maybe born in Scotland. He was said to have married Agnes Grace Wilson, but not finding docurment.

He had the following known children per will and bible:

1) Hannah Houston b 31 Oct 1755 d Oct 1826 Greene Co TN m Isaac Baker (1757-1818)

2) Johnson "John" Houston b 10 Jan 1760

3) William Houston b 28 May 1763 d bet 05 Jun 1841-04 Oct 1843 Greene Co TN (date of will to date of probate) m Susannah Long

4) Rachel Jo Houston b 22 Sep 1765 d 22 Sep 1834 Greene Co TN m George Corn Jones (1761-1846)

4) Absolom Houston b abt 1767 d aft 1828 Monroe Co TN m Rebecca Hamilton

5) Mary "Polly" Houston b ab 1769 VA m James Russell

6) Nancy Agnes Houston b abt 1771 VA m 21 Nov 1791 Greene Co TN John Horton (1765-1835) Their marriage bond gives her name as Agnes and the bond is signed by William Houston (bro) and John Horton.

James Hughston son of John and Agnes Hughston was Borned June 7th 1737 Hannah Hughston was Bd October 31 1755 John Hughston was Borned January 10, 1760 Rachel Jo Hughston was born September 22, 1765 then the Horton children are listed no death or marriage pages on file.

James Houston's will:

"I give and bequeath unto Hannah Baker, Johnson Houston, William Houston and John Horton all my estate to be equally divided amongst him except the property that I shall hereafter devise.

That is I give and bequeath unto George Jones, one Negro boy named Marshal and no more.

I give and bequeath to Absolam Houston one Negro girl named Tildey and a Negro by Milchall and no more.

I give and bequeath unto Polly Russell a Mulatto girl named Jane and no more.

I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter what money my bay mare saddle and bridle also one bead and furniture will sell for, and also that my executors may keep the money and interest until the said Rebecca comes of age and then the executors hereafter named to lay out the money for a horse, saddle, and bridle and bead in case there will be money sufficient for that purpose.

I hereby appoint William Houston and John Horton Executors of this my last will and Testament and lastly I do revoke all wills or former wills by me made and declare this only to be my last will and Testament whereof I the said James Houston set my and seal this 18th day of April 1820".
