Biography

Hiram was born in 1871. He was the son of William Hover and Julia Silvernail.[1] On 30 April 1893, Hiram was married to Cora Brink[2]; although the New York State Marriage Index lists Cora's maiden name as Briuk, her name is engraved on the tombstone of Joseph M. Brink as Cora Hover according to Holloway.[3] In 1900, Hiram and Cora are living with their daughter Anna Hover, along with one William H. Carroll, who was boarding with the Hovers.[4]

A Hiram H. Hover of the same age as our subject is found working as a servant in Niles, Cayuga County, in 1905.[5] One year prior, a daughter "Neta" is reported to have passed away in Candor. According to Holloway, the newspaper stated that Neta had passed away in Union, Broome County, at her mother's home.[6] This suggests that Cora and Hiram had divorced. Also in 1905, one Cora M. Carroll is living with William H. Carroll, and a daughter, Mary.[7] According to Holloway, Cora indeed married William sometime between 1900 and 1904, however no marriage record has been found. Cora passed away in 1905.

Hiram did marry again, in 1909, to Bertha Benson; according to their marriage license, Hiram and Cora divorced on June 24, 1904.[8] Hiram and Bertha were living on Lyon Street in Binghamton in 1910.[9] Bertha passed away in the same year, having been married only fifteen months.[10] A cenotaph of Hiram is inscribed on Bertha's headstone in Binghamton.[11]

Hiram married Sarah Aylesworth (née Warfle) of Endicott on 21 June 1915.[12] The Hovers stayed in Broome County for several years [13] before returning to Tioga County, settling in Owego.[14][15] They lived on Talcott Street, as did Clifford Hanes; the Hanes and the Hovers were distantly associated since Hiram's niece and Clifford's cousin married in 1911. Sarah passed away in 1944, and is buried with her late husband Nelson Aylesworth.[16]

Hiram passed away in 1950, and is buried in Endicott.[17]
