Hannah Hovey was born in 1788, the daughter of Levi Hovey and Miriam George. Her exact birth date is calculated from her age at death, on her tombstone i.e. 89 years, 1 month, 15 days. Hannah's grandfather was a Baptist preacher from Newton, New Hampshire, (originally from Connecticut) who had started preaching occasionally in Weare in 1766, moving permanently to Weare in April of 1768.[1]
Hannah and Clark had seven children, all born in Weare:
Benjamin Franklin, b. 31 July 1816; m. Catherine Ann Black, 27 Nov. 1842
James Monroe, b. 1819; d. 1843 (unm.)
Levi Hovey, b. 9 March 1821; m. Eliza Ann Johnson, 5 Sept. 1848; d. 9 Aug. 1873
Samuel Clark, b. 1823; d. 1840
George Evans, b. 11 Nov. 1824; m. Eliza Jane Moore, 3 July 1851; d. 19 Sept. 1899
Sarah Buzzell, b. 16 Sept. 1827; m. Stephen Kimball Fifield, 26 Dec. 1844; d. 5 Feb. 1883, and
Amos Wood, b. 4 Aug. 1829; m. Mary Cook Swart, 27 March 1855; d. 1876
The family appeared on the 1820[3] and 1830[4] censuses for Weare. And on the list of Weare taxpayers for 1810, 1820 and 1830.[5]
Her husband took his own life in 1830.[6] In the ensuing decades, Hannah lived with various children, initially in New Hampshire then Ohio. She was recorded in 1850[7] at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Levi and Eliza Bailey, at Dunbarton, NH, then in 1860[8] at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, George and Eliza Bailey, in Jefferson Township, Richland County, OH. She was again with George and Eliza on the 1870 census[9] Peru Township, Morrow County, OH.
Hannah passed away in 1877, age 89, and was interred in Graceland Cemetery in Webster City, Iowa.[10]
