Stephen Hovey born in Topsfield, Mass., Feb. 24, 1741/42[1][2].
He married Abigail (Potter) Hood of Topsfield (published July 18, 1761[3]). She was baptized in Topsfield May 24, 1741. [4]
Stephen and Abigail arrived at Saint John, N.B. April 26, 1767 on the schooner "Eunice" and later settled in Maugerville, N.B. On the schooner with them was Abigail's sister Sarah and her husband Alexander Tapley who also settled in Maugerville.
The Hovey book has the following[4]:
262 STEPHEN HOVEY5, born in Topsfield, Mass., Feb. 24, 1741-2. He was a yeoman, and lived in Topsfield until about 1768, when he settled at Mangerville, on the St. John river, in New Brunswick. For one hundred and twenty-one pounds, he conveyed sixty acres and one hundred and thirty rods of land in Topsfield May 3. 1765.* For eight pounds, he conveyed to Allen Pearly of Ipswich, yeoman, two acres of meadow in Topsfield, on Pie brook, April 10, 1767.☨
The following is acopy of Mr. Hovey's signature on a bond given in the course of settlement of the estate of his father in 1765:
Mr. Hovey married Abigail, daughter of Nathaniel and Abigail (Potter) Hood of Topsfield (published July 18, 1761). She was baptized in Topsfield May 24, 1741. She was his wife in 1767. The dates of their deaths have not come to the knowledge of the writer ; he was dead in 1793, however.Their children were born as follows :-
- 556 - I. AARON, baptized March 14, 1762, in Topsfield. See family numbered "556."
- 557 - II. MARY, baptized March 4, 1764, in Topsfield.
- 558 - III. m. ABIGAIL, baptized Sept 29, 1765, in Topsfield.
- 559 - IV. SARAH, married Malachi Orcutt of Penobscot, Me., yeoman, and she probably died, childless, before 1793. Mr. Orcutt, for six pounds, conveyed to John Tibbits of Bangor, Me., yeoman, the estate "coming to me or my wife Sarah Orcutt by heirship out of my father Stephen Hovey's estate, late of Topsfield, deceased, he being heir to his father Aaron Hovey's estate, of Topsfield, deceased," July 24, 1793.* For seven pounds and three shillings, Mr. Tibbits conveyed to Ivory Hovey of Topsfield, yeoman, Timothy Emerson, yeoman, and Joseph Hood, yeoman, both of Hollis, N. H. all the estate of Stephen Hovey, late of Majorville, Cumberland, Nova Scotia, yeoman, and also said Sarah's interest in the estate of Aaron Hovey of Topsfield, deceased, Sept. to, 1793 ℴ
