Firstborn of eight children to Howard and Ruth Hovis, and didn't know my paternal grandfather, John Hovis, because he passed away while I was still an infant. His mother, my great-grandmother was widowed around 1900 with six young children. She had immigrated from Ireland around the age of 17 and lived in a tiny village of Beechwood near Emporium PA. They lived at the foot of a hill where John Hovis was buried in an unmarked grave in the Markert Cemetery on private property. Next to his burial plot there is an old, old, tombstone with only the initials D.H. My great-grandfather's name was David Hovis and we had been told for many years that he immigrated from Germany. It has been impossible to confirm any information about him or his family.
