Ephraim How was born about 1626. He was listed as 9 years old on the 1635 manifest of the Truelove.[1]
He married Anne Haugh, who was born in Bristol, England in 1630. They had nine children. He was located in New Haven, Connecticut, where all the children were born as early as 1653, and was a mariner engaged in trade between Boston and Salem.
He was owner of the Hopewell which traded to Delaware and Virginia.[2]
On one of his trips in 1676, his vessel a small ketch with himself, two of his sons, and three others, was driven out to sea by adverse winds. His two sons and one of his companions died. The ship was wrecked, and he and his two remaining companions were cast upon a desolate island near Cape Sable. His companions died, but he was rescued after 7 months on the island. These events were recorded by Hubbard in his History of New England and by Cotton Mather in his Magnolia, Vol. 2, pp 343-345. Another account said to have been written by the poet Percival appears in the "Mariner's Chronicles" published at New Haven in 1834. See also, the Essex Antiquarian, Vol. 2.
He died 8 Sep 1680 in New Haven, and an inventory of his estate was taken 30 October 1680 in the New Haven Probate Records, Vol I, p 185.[3] He left an estate of £352.[2]
