Biography

Born in 1850 in Breathitt County, Kentucky, Polly Ann Howard Mann was a woman of resilience. Educated for her time, she married Adam Mann at around 17 and faced early heartache when their first child, Lourena, died shortly after birth from diarrhea-related dehydration. The loss was a harsh initiation into motherhood, but Polly and Adam pressed on to raise nine children on their farm.

The couple navigated life's ups and downs until Adam's death from cancer in 1900. The early 1900s were particularly trying for Polly; she lost her daughter Solena in 1902 and her oldest daughter, Minerva, to fever in 1903. Her son Lee was shot in a gunfight in 1904.

Despite hardships, Polly was resourceful, even selling hogs in 1905 to contribute to the family's income. Her last days were spent caring for her ailing son Nando; tragically, she contracted the typhoid fever that took his life and passed away three days after him in 1929.

Polly died at the age of 79 on 17 May 1929 in Jackson, Breathitt County, Kentucky and was buried in Lambric, Breathitt County, Kentucky.[1]
