George Edward Howard, 91, formerly of Dartmouth Street, died Nov. 4, 2005. A native of Portsmouth, he retired from the Naval Air Station and the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Department as a deputy. He also served more than 19 years in the National Guard attached to Battalion C. He was a member of First Friends Church and Portsmouth Old Timers Club. The widower of Mary Elizabeth Howard, he is survived by two daughters, Pamela Roberts and husband Pete of Suffolk and Debbie Hebert Ray of Portsmouth; one son, Leon Robert Howard and wife Edith of Abilene, Texas; one sister, Frances Bingley of Norfolk; six grandchildren, Tracy Linton, Becky Hinton, Stephen Roberts, Robbie Howard, Angela Roberts and Cherie Edwards; and 13 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Jim Myers. The family will be at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
