  • [Umbarger Family Tree 060401.FTW] REFN: 1253 OBITUARY Mary Jane (Howard) McClain was born near Ogden in Rush Co unty, Indiana, May 16, 1836. She died June 2, 1915, aged 79 years and 12 days . Her parents moved to Howard County when she was about ten years of age. A t the age of 19 in 1855 she was united in marriage to James McClain. To this union were born eight children - Arthur, who died in infancy, Louvina Ammon o f Swayzee, Leonila Davis of Swayzee, Mary Ann, who died at the age of 17, Joh n T. of Greentown, James E. of Tempe, Arizona and Ada Esther who died at the age of 6. Also a brother-in-law's son James B. McClain was raised to the age of 18 when he suddenly died from the effects of the kick of a horse. In the year 1856 she moved with her husband to Sims Township in Grant County. By her help and earnest toil a comfortable home was made and her family reared. On Nov. 24, 1904 she was left a widow and soon after placed herself under the w atchful care of her daughter, Louvina Ammon, where she enjoyed her little hom e, endeavoring to wisely counsel and admonish her children with a real mother 's love until strength failed and she could do no more. Before the Civil War, near 1856, she united with the Christian Church at Slash (now called Normal) her home being one mile north, and never transferred her membership. In late in life, when unable to toil, much of her time was given to the reading of God 's Holy word, for she longed for Spiritual Food. In her last illness, suffering two strokes of paralysis, she was not able to speak to her children but wit h earnest look and fond embrace she loved them still. At times her hand was r aised heavenward and a pleading upward look bore unmistakable evidence that s he was pleading in prayer to a Savior who said "Whosoever will, may come," an d "He that cometh to me I will in no wise cast. Out." She leaves two brother s, one sister, five children, twenty-two grandchildren, four great grandchild ren, and a large acquaintance of friends who mourn their loss. Rev. J. T. Ag ema of Swayzee at the Normal Church conducted the funeral service last Saturd ay afternoon.
