Biography

Edward Granville George Howard born on 23 December 1809 was a younger son of George Howard earl of Carlisle, and his wife, Georgiana Cavendish. [1]

He joined the Royal Navy 5 April 1823 and obtained his first commission 19 September 1829. He saw service in the Mediterranean aboard Pelican captained by Joseph Gape for 1830 until 1833 when he was promoted to Commander and returned to Parliament as Member for Morpeth. He later served on Serpent and Wolverene before being put on half pay in 1838 and was again returned to Parliament in 1840. [2]

On 9 August 1842 at St George, Hanover Sq he married Diana Harriet Louisa Ponsonby, daughter of George Ponsonby and his wife, Diana Bouverie. [3]

Promoted to Admiral in 1870 Edward was created Baron Lanerton of Lanerton in Cumberland in 1874. He died in 1880 his death being registered at St George Hanover Sq. [4]
