Biography

William Eaton Howard, son of James and Mary Ann (Tracey) Howard, was born on 13 May 1836 or 1833 in Bozrahville, New London County, Connecticut.[1][2][3][4]

He married Elizabeth Hannah (Potter) Yeaw, widow of Farnum Yeaw, and daughter of Johnson and Elizabeth R. Potter. He left Elizabeth about 1870 and went to Saline, Michigan. Elizabeth died on 6 Oct. 1884.[1][3]

He was a clergyman when he and Elizabeth appeared on the census of 22 June 1860 at Scituate, Providence, Rhode Island.[5] William is in the 1870 census twice. He was a laborer when he and Elizabeth appeared on the census of 9 July 1870 at Scituate, Providence, Rhode Island.[6] He was an insurance agent when he and Emily (Burnham) Van Ness appeared on the census of 18 July 1870 at Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan. Emily was using the name Howard, but they were not married.[7] He and and Emily Howard, she used a married name though they were not yet married, witnessed the marriage of Olive E. Van Ness, daughter of Emily, and "Professor" Henry Friend on 3 Feb, 1883 in Niles, Michigan.[2]

He married Emily Burnham, divorced wife of Jacob M. VanNess and daughter of Allen Burnham and Olive M. (Hanson) Burnham, on 3 Sep. 1883 in Will County, Illinois.[2][3]

In early 1883 Henry C. Friend, his wife Olive, her mother Emily (Burnham) Howard, and Emily's husband William E. Howard, Lyman Burnham, brother of Olive, as well as George and Gus Halstead and Henry Hack set up the Electric_Sugar_Refining_Company, a fraud company that was based on a complete fabrication.[2][1] He served about 6 years in Sing-Sing for his role in the fraud.[3]

He married Alice Langworthy Leonard on 14 Sep. 1899 in Milan, Washtenaw, Michigan.[4][2]

He and Alice appeared on the census of June 1900 at York, Washtenaw, Michigan.[8]

William died on 12 April 1917 at Milan, Washtenaw County, Michigan and was buried at Marble Park Cemetery, Milan, Washtenaw County, Michigan.[9] His memorial has photos, biographical material and links to those of family members.[3]
