Born on 18 August 1776 Thomas Howard was the second son of John Howard, earl of Suffolk and his wife, Julia Gaskarth.[1] He was educated at Eton, Christ Church, Oxford and Lincoln's Inn.[1]
On 11 January 1800 his elder brother, Charles, was killed in a shooting accident leaving a childless widow, Elizabeth Coke. [2] Thomas succeeded his brother as his father's heir and took the courtesy title, Viscount Andover. [1]
Thomas was returned to Parliament with John Atkins in 1802 as member for Arundel. [3]
On 3 January 1803 at St George, Hanover Sq he married the Honourable Elizabeth Jane Dutton, [4] daughter of James Napper Dutton and his wife, Elizabeth Coke.[1] They were the parents of 5 sons and 5 daughters. [1]
He tried for Parliament again in 1806 but was defeated at Cricklade by Thomas Goddard and Lord Portchester. [5]
His father died on 23 January 1820 whereupon Thomas succeeded as Earl of Suffolk and Earl of Berkshire.[1]
Jane died in 1836 aged 60 [6]and Thomas lied on for a further 15 years dying 4 December 1851. [1] [7]
