Biography

In 1845, Joseph's mother Sarah left "her oldest son, Joseph" $50.00 in her will.

He married Mary "Polly" Hylton on 2 March 1833.in Floyd County. After her death, he married Jane Shelor on 5 January 1836.^[1]

He died on the 27th of July 1865 and is buried at Pine Creek Cemetery, Floyd, Virginia, United States.

A Joseph L. Howard applied for amnesty after the Civil War^[2], but it is a reasonably common name. Someone with Fold3 access could take a look to see if the application was made in Floyd County.

This was a well-connected family; check 1850 and 1860 Slave Schedules to see if Joseph was a slave owner.

Found appraisal and estate sale papers; will not yet located (although maybe he died intestate)
