Unknown Parents

Please Do Not Add Parents for Sarah Stone without Proven Sources and Discussion with Profile Managers

Many trees have William's wife Sarah as Sarah Howard, some with her being the daughter of Francis Howard and some the daughter of Matthew Howard. I have totally eliminated Francis as her father since he was only 6 years old at the time of her birth and cannot find credible documentation that supports Matthew as her father.

Also note that Howard may not even be her maiden name, this is only speculation based on may merged family trees with no credible sources for her maiden name.

It has also been speculated that her maiden name could be Lewis, since this family was close to the Stone's and lived in the same area.

Howard Profile: For changes to this profile before the "Last Name at Birth" (LNAB) was changed from Howard to Unknown (on 25 April 2021), please see this Changes page. ~ Noland-165

STONE The name of Stone in Virginia dates from the coming of George Stone, who was born in London, England in 1597, and came to Jamestown in 1620. He was a wealthy banker and a stockholder in the Virginia Land Company of London, and was a cousin of Governor William Stone of Maryland. He married Mary Vernon. Their son … Col. John Stone married Mary Nelson. Their son … William Stone married Virginia Howard. Their son … Joshua Stone married Mary Coleman in 1748. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary Army and promoted to Captain. (The first marker at the grave of a Revolutionary soldier, placed by the William Pitt Chapter if the D.A.R. of the Pittsylvania County, Va., is in the Stone family burying ground, at the grave of Capt. Joshua Stone.) [ed. note: The following son is our ancestor’s brother.] Their son … John Stone (born in Halifax County, Va., November 25, 1754; died in Pittsylvania County in 1824) , married Dollie Haskins in 1776. Their son … Edmund Stone (born 1805; died 1840) married Nancy Chapman Dickinson in 1827. Their son … James Crispin Stone (born February 8 1832; died February 27, 1897), a veteran of the War Between the States, was wounded in the hip at Yellow Tavern in the Spring of 1864, and was not in active service again. He belonged to Company “E”, 6 Virginia Cavalry. He married, March 8, 1855, Sarah Fannie Edwards, born March 22, 1834; died May 9, 1900; daughter of Gideon Edwards (born February 14, 1801; died March 13, 1870; son of Coleman Edwards and ____ Allen) and Martha A. Gilbert (born January 9, 1812; died April 16, 1863), who were married January 20, 1828.

Many individuals have Sarah Stone tied to Matthew Howard, but there are other options that must be searched from this particular family. Burkes Geneology has the following:

Matthew, Thomas and Frederick all came to America because they were the younger sons of Mathew and Ann Thoroughgood. They each married. Matthew married Ann Hall, his sister Ann married Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore. There is no record of who Thomas and Frederick married.

There appear to be 2 William Stone's married to her at this point. William Stone (abt.1645-aft.1707) and William Stone (abt.1645-abt.1707)
Hi Cheryl & US Southern Colonies Project - This profile had all kinds of warnings about her maiden name not being known, so I added the project account as manager (it already had the project box), changed her LNAB to Unknown & locked the profile (which will prevent those not managers or leaders from adding parents).

Give me a holler if you have any questions.

Cheers, Liz

Perhaps this is where someone got the Idea of a Sarah Howard, Book: Lancaster County, VA, Court Orders & Deeds 1656-1680, page 18 (p.230) There is due to Will Dudley rights for Trans.. . ."Cert. to Mr. George Keble for the trans. of . . . .Saray Howard. . ." It appears that she was single and Lancaster County is right next door to Richmond where William Stone resided. The year of the Certificate for Transfer was in 1663, so it was before Sarah _ _ _ _? Married William Stone. Of COURSE THIS IS NOT ENOUGH TO PROVE that Mrs. Sarah Stone wife of William Stone was this Sary Howard that was transfered by Mr. George Keble.
