Biography

Benjamin Franklin Howard was born in Leeds, now Maine, on 4 Jun 1806, the son of Seth Howard and Desire Bailey.

He married Philenia Gould on 16 May 1830 in Leeds, Maine. After Philenia died, her daughters Maria and Cordelia lived with Philenia's parents, and her sons Marcellus and Corydon lived with Jabez and Lucinda (Howard) Leadbetter.

Benajamin married Philenia's cousin Fannie Chamberlain Gould on 17 Mar 1851 at Leeds who died about a year after marriage, the result of childbirth. Their newborn daughter died the same day as her mother on 28 Mar 1852.

The 1870 USA census of Leeds, Maine lists residents Adoniram J Foss (38), a farmer, Theresa M Foss (25), keeping house, Lena H Foss (3), Charles Woodman (10), and Benjn [sic] F Howard (64). All were born in Leeds, Maine except for Charles who was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Foss owns real estate valued at $3000 and has a personal estate valued at $ 1200. NOTE: Benjamin Howard is the father of Theresa Foss.

The 1880 US census for Leeds, Maine lists residents Judson Foss (48), a farmer, wife Theresa Foss (45), keeping house, daughters Lena H Foss (13), at school, and Lucy M Foss (1), father-in-law B. Frank Howard (73), widowed, works on farm and Caroll [sic] E Fernald (20), farm laborer. All were born in Maine.

Benjamin died in Leeds on 30 Dec 1882 and is buried there at the Fairview Cemetery.
