Biography

Susie (Howard) Vance lived in Appalachia, in North Carolina.
. This Susannah Howard, born in 1767 in Surry County, North Carolina, was a daughter of Jane (Allen) Howard (abt.1729-1805) and Abraham Howard (1726-1782).

The caption of a Find A Grave: Memorial #34769080, the principal source currently supporting this profile, describes her as follows:

She was the great grandmother of "Devil Anse" through Elizabeth and her daughter Nancy Vance, "Devil Anses" mother.

She was the wife of Abner Sr. hung in Abingdon Va July 16, 1819 for the killing of Horton, reputed father of Nancy Vance. The reason being abandonment. More than 4,000 were at Abner's hanging after various trials lasting three years. Abner is recognized for patriotic service during the Great American Revolution by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

After Abner's hanging, Susannah with her children came across the Big Sandy. Abner and Susannah are the ancestors of southwestern West Virginia Vances.

Uncle Jim "Bad" Vance was a leading instigator in the feud and assigned assassin of most of the McCoys. He killed his first McCoy, Asa Harmon McCoy, hid out in a Kentucky cave in 1865. Uncle Jim was eventually caught up with in 1888 and his place of burial is unknown.

In 1779 Abner Vance married Susannah Howard in Lebanon , Virginia [1]. They made their home in Russell County, Virginia. and this was where their children were born:

In 1850 Susannah Vance was enumerated in the household of Francis Browning, Logan county, Virginia [2]

The above cited grave memorial represents that Susannah "Susie" (Howard) Vance died in 1860, and was buried in Hatfield Family Cemetery, Sarah Ann, Logan County, West Virginia, USA.

Some genealogists believe Susannah, (daughter of Abraham and Jane Allen Howard) buried here, perhaps the first. Others consider Susannah may be buried in the old Vance Cemetery at Island Creek.
