Biography

William was born 23 Jan 1832. He was the son of John Howard and Susannah Yarbrough. He passed away in 1905.

William Porter Howard and Mary Susannah Goodwin began their married life together in Sparta, White County, Tennessee, after marrying there on December 29, 1849. William lacked one month of being eighteen years of age. They settled down to a life of farming and house-keeping as their parents before them had done.

Mary’s parents had been in White County, Tennessee all of their lives. Her grandfather, David Goodwin was settling in the northwest corner of White County, as early as 1808. From the Revolutionary War records of David Goodwin from the National Archives, we know the following about him and his family.

David Goodwin was born February 24, 1763 in Saint David’s Parish, Darlington, South Carolina. He was married March 6, 1800 in Darlington County, South Carolina to Nancy Carter by a Baptist Preacher William Coleman. His wife, Nancy was born in 1774 also in Darlington, S.C. it is known that they had at least four children: John T. Goodwin—there are many records of him in White County, Tennessee; William E. Goodwin, who married Charity and is the father of Mary J. (Goodwin) Howard; Mary Ann Goodwin, b. 31 June 1813; md. Richard T. Baker; d. 8 March 1891; David died in White County, Tennessee 23 Nov. 1838; His wife Nancy Carter Goodwin died February 1859 also in White County, Tennessee.

The 1850 census of White County, Tennessee, plus the family records of Miss Mattie Howard searched by Stella Judd on her trip in 1965 tell the following information about William and Charity Goodwin, Mary J. (Goodwin) Howard’s family. Children of William and Charity Goodwin—all born in White County, Tennessee. Susan M. Goodwin, b. 1830; James P. Goodwin, b. 1832; Mary J. Goodwin, b. 30 Nov. 1833; md. 29 Dec. 1849, William Porter Howard; d. 19 Jan. 1907; William A. Goodwin, b. 1836; Isaac T. Goodwin, b. 1840; Margaret C. Goodwin, b. 1843; Martha J. Goodwin, b. 1845; Joseph D. Goodwin, b. 1849.

The Macedonia Baptist Church in White County, started between 1810-1815 and was built on the farm of William Goodwin. This William could very likely have been a brother of David Goodwin. Many Goodwins, Howard’s, and Saylors were listed as members of this church for many years. Among them was William P. Howard and some of his sons. Roy D. Howard could remember some of William P. Howard’s sons who lived to ripe old ages. The boys he could remember were called Tucker, George, Charlie, and Sid. The family listed in order of birth were: James Thomas Howard, b. 1 Dec. 1851; md. 21 Sept. 1871, Martha R. Lollar; d. 7 Jan. 1937; William Decatur Howard, b. 18 Dec. 1853; md. Love Hatson; d. 15 May 1922. He went by the nickname of Tuck or Tucker; Maranda Caroline HowRd, b. 29 Dec. 1855; md. James Lollar; Louisa Jane Howard, b. 25 Feb. 1858; md.
