John Howard was christened on 29 Sep 1839 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of Thomas and Ann Howard. His father's occupation was recorded as watch maker, and the family's address as Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, the family was living in Hackley Moss, Eccleston; John's father was a journeyman watch maker.

By March 30th 1851, they were in Lane Ends, Eccleston; John's father was a master watch fusee maker.
