Biography

Ignatius Howard was born about 1725 in St Mary's County, Province of Maryland, Colonial America.

By April 19th 1773[1], Ignatius has relocated to Greenbrier

Ignatius Howard was a soldier for three years (1774-1777) in The Botetourt County Regiment commanded by Colonel William Fleming, serving under Captain Matthew Arbuckle's Company, he died on his way home of Small Pox in the winter of 1777[2],

May 1784[4]- "Ordered James Alexander, Gent. to take the desposition of Sarah Howard to prove that Henry Howard is the eldest son and heir at law of Ignatius Howard, deceased, her late husband, and that said Ignatius died intestate.

Greenbrier Co. (WV) Ct.records 1786-1789

Deposition 15 Aug. 1786[5], that SARAH HOWARD was widow of Ignatius Howard, a soldier in Capt. Matthew Arbuckle's Co. on State Service, who died of Small Pox in 1777[2], that SARAH had three children.

Court held in Greenbrier County the 18th day of August 1786[5]: Ordered that Sarah Howard, (widow of Ignatius Howard, a soldier in Capt. Matthew Arbuckle's Company who died with the smallpox in the year 1777) with her three children be recommended as pensioner in need of the assistance of the government and that the former allowance made her ought to be continued. Letter 15 Nov. 1786[5] to B. Blair from James Henderson that Sarah Howard, about 60 years of age, was a widow withthree small children, the oldest a son and two small daughters.Certificate authorizing pension approved by the Executive

I do with the advice of the Council hereby certify that Sarah Ignatius, widow of Howard Ignatius, late a private in the Captain Arbuckle's Company, who died in the service of the United States is entitled to the sum of twelve pounds yearly: to commence from the 1st day of January 1786. Given under my hand as Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, at Richmond, this15th day of November, 1786. Signed: P. Henry
