Caroline was born in 1794 to Samuel Howard and Anna Lillie in Boston, Massachusetts.

Caroline Howard was one of the most popular female authors of the mid 19th century.

She married Rev. Samuel Gilman in 1819. They had one daughter, Caroline Howard.

She was an editor for one of the first American children's magazines.

She passed away in 1888.
