Thomas Howard was born about 1633, possibly in Yorkshire, England. About 1669, he married a women named Patience. Her maiden name is not known yet.
Together they may have had at least three children:
But it's possible that Thomas Howard, who married Patience _ _ _ _? only had one child. Elizabeth who married William Wren. Book: "Abstracts Lancaster County, Virginia, Wills 1653-1800" by Ida J. Lee Page 235 -236. . .Says: John Steptoe was the brother of William Wren, Implying that William's wife Elizabeth was most like a sibling to John Steptoe. Some believe Elizabeth was a 1/2 sister to John. Nothing proven yet. But that means there may have been two different Thomas Howard's and two different Elizabeth Howard's. https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Howard-20081
It's possible that the 3 Girls Mary, Elizabeth, and Ann who received there inheritance from Gloucester Co., VA. could have been the daughter's of The Thomas Howard and Ann _ _ _ _? that married who Rice Hoe, II. about 1688/1689. It would appear that the Deposition of 1692/93 of Staffordshire County, VA may have been related to this couple and NOT the other.
"By 31 Dec 1689, Rice Hooe had married the widow of Thomas Howard, Ann _ _ _ _?apparently. On 13 Mar 1689/90, he was sued by John Davis who had been sold to Mr. Thomas Howard, "predecessor of Mr. Rice Hoe" (sic) for 4 years" So, these Two different Thomas Howard's may need to be separated. 1. Thomas Howard, who married Patience, widow of Anthony Steptoe 1678/79. Thomas Howard and Patience's daughter Elizabeth who married William Wren. 2. Thomas Howard, married Ann_ _ _ _ ?, widow, who married Rice Hoe, 1688/89.
These Two Thomas Howard's CANNOT be the same Person. There is NO way One Thomas Howard could have been married to both Patience _ _ _ _ _? and Ann _ _ _ _ _? So, I believe they are two different Thomas Howard's and need to be separated.
Thomas Howard passed away before 1678. It would appear that Patience, his wife was remarried by March of 1678 to an Anthony Steptoe which would mean that Thomas had already passed away. His 3 daughter being underage did not receive their inheritance until 10 year later[1]
So, these Two delima's with Two Different Thomas Howard's and Two Different Elizabeth Howard's need to be solved before moving on and there may need to be a separation of these two different lines. Before moving on to who Thomas Howard's Parents were.
Some genealogists have suggested he was a descendant of the Howards of Effingham, specifically John Howard, the son of Sir Francis Howard (1585 - 1651), who settled in Charles Parish, York County, Virginia.
Connecting the Howards of York County to the Howards of Gloucester County is difficult. The Howards of Gloucester County, Virginia, seem to stem from one William Howard.
According to Willis (below), p. 331: "Both the courthouses of Gloucester and Buckingham counties, with all records, have also been burned, and it is in consequence most difficult to obtain the complete record of the present Howard family. The authors of this history are therefore at some disadvantage; however from land office and other records, family tradition, etc., we arrive at a very conclusive genealogy.
"First William Howard Sr. His son, Wm. Howard Jr., probably had three sons, John, Benjamin, and Thomas, family names to the present.
"In Land Book 7, page 643, we find a record of Thomas, and it is the only time we have found his name in the Colonial Records. It is a land grant to his daughters and follows:
To all ye Whereas know ye yt I ye gov. Francis Lord Howard Gov. doe with ye advice and consent of ye Councill of State accordingly Give and Grant unto Mary, Elizabeth and Anne Howard Daughters of Mr. Thomas Howard one hundred and Eighty Acres of land in Petsoe parish Glost county, etc. etc.
"The above grant was made in the year 1685. "Petsoe parish" was undoubtedly intended for Petsworth parish" [in Gloucester County].
. . . ."According to family tradition, Allen Howard, who founded Howardsville, in what is now Albemarle county, came from Gloucester county and was descended from the first William Howard there, so his father was probably Mr. Thomas Howard, though it is possible his father may have been either John or Benjamin."
