Biography
Ellen was born in 1849 in Howden, Yorkshire, England[1][2]. Her parents were John HOWDEN and Ruth RICHARDSON.
Ellen came to Australia with her parents, John Howden and Ruth Richardson, and four of her siblings. It is not clear if this number includes a boy born on the voyage out. They travelled on the "Blundell" which arrived at Adelaide on the 31st of August 1851, chartered by the Family Loan Colonization Society. They are on the Adelaide newspapers' passenger list[3], and also on the Melbourne newspapers' passenger list for the 29th of September.[4] Unfortunately for records, this was the time of the Gold Rush. On 29 February 1852, the Blundell was still in the Bay. [5] All the sailors had cut and run and gone to the diggings. On 18 May The Argus reported that it had finally left on 22 April.[6] It arrived back in London on 2 October.
Richard GRACIE and Ellen Salome HOWDEN were married in 1865 in Victoria, Australia[7].
