Joseph Howden was born to Eliza Howden who was not married. At present, his father is unknown. He was raised by Eliza's parents John Howden and Elizabeth Dawson. His mother married John Tye two years after Joseph's birth, but he remained with his grandparents. His mother and John Tye went on to have twelve children between 1870 and 1891. When Joseph was 19 his mother and John Tye moved with their older children to Queensland, Australia where their last three or four children were born. Joseph never saw his mother or his half siblings after that. In 1889 he married Lydia Ann Widdowson in her native town of Granby, Nottinghamshire, England. They became the parents of their first daughter, Lillie, in Granby. Within months they had emigrated to the US to Iowa to be near his mother's sister Betsey Knott and her family. They lived in the Parkersburg area for several years having more children there and then moved to Minnesota where there last two children were born. Joseph died in Austin in 1932.
