Born in Ipswich, Mass., 19 June 1760; married in Rowley, Massachuetts on 17 Dec. 1783, Betty Foster,[1] daughter of Moses and Hannah (Putnam) Foster, born in Boxford, Mass., 10 Aug. 1763. (Her mother was said to have been a'relative of Gen. Israel Putnarn). The Continental Army records show that Jacob served in the army as a private in Capt. Thomas Turner's Co. of Col. Jackson's Regt. from zq May 1777 to 31 Dec. 1779, being then credited to Ipswich. He served also as a private in Capt. William Scott's Co. of the same regiment, I Jan. 1780 to 24 May 1780 being credited then to the town of Newbury, Mass. After the close of the war he settled in Rowley, Mass.. and later he lived in the towns of Baldwin, Bridgton and Paris, Me. He was the first mail carrier in Oxford Co., Me., being familiarly known as "Post Howe." He began about 1798 to carry the mails between Portland, Bridgton and Fryeburg, Me. In 1802 the route was extended to Waterford, and in 1803 he commenced making weekly trips starting from Portland and ending at Waterford. He was in the service for four years before retiring. He died 30 Jan. 1830 and was buried at Norway, Me. His widow died in Paris, Me., in 1853.[2]
