Biography

William was born 1 Oct 1869. He is the son of Charles Howe and Mary Hildrup. He attended Yale University, starting in the Sheffield Scientific School in 1990, and in the Yearbook for the main college in 1891. In 1893, he appears in the Senior Class Directory at Yale, with the following write-up:

WILLIAM THOMAS HILDRUP HOWE
Was born in Leona, Penn., October 1, 1869. His life since has been spent everywhere. His father is a clergyman, C. L. F. Howe, A.B, Ph. D. Wesleyan '53. Traces his ancestry to Sir Hugh and Sir William Howe, of England. HIs blood is English. Great-grandfather was commanding officer at Lexington. Great-uncle was the landlord of the famous "Wayside Inn".

The truth of the genealogy claims is stretched a bit. His great great grandfather Ezekiel and Ezekiel's father David were landlords of the Wayside Inn. The rest is speculative.

An 1897 compilation of degrees conferred at Yale lists him with a 1893 PhB degree and lists a research paper titled: "The Existence of two Orthophthalic Acids."

He was a bachelor.

He died in 1939 in New York. His obituary in the Cortland New York newspaper identifies him as a Yale Professor for a while, the President of the American Book Company, and a collector of rare books, including the only remaining first American edition of "Alice in Wonderland".

Notes

HIs gravestone in Cortland, Corland, New York says he was born 1 Oct 1868. His Social Security Application says he was born 1 Oct 1874. His Yale class bio says he was born 1 Oct 1869.
