Biography

2nd Baronet Howe, of Berwick, St. Leonard's, M.P. for Hindon, County of Wiltshire.

Background

He was the only surviving son of Sir George Grobham Howe, 1st Baronet Howe, of Berwick, St. Leonard's, and Elizabeth Grimston.

He succeeded his father as 2nd Baronet Howe, of Berwick, St. Leonard's, on 26 September 1676.

He was Executor to his mother, Elizabeth Grimston Howe, on 11 May 1709.

Member of Parliament

He was M.P. for Hindon from 25 July 1698 until April 1705.

"SIR JAMES HOWE, [2nd Bart.,] who m. first, Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Nutt, esq. of Nackington, in Kent [d. 1691], he wedded secondly, Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of [Henry] Stratford, esq. of Halling, in Gloucestershire, but died s.p. 19th January 1735, aged sixty-six, when the BARONETCY EXPIRED."

"The family of Stratford purchased the manor [of Guiting Power, Gloucestershire] about 1600, and afterwards Sir James Howe, Bart. succeeded to it by marriage with the daughter and coheir of Henry Stratford."

Death

He died without issue on 19 January 1735/6, aged 66, and the Baronetcy became Extinct on his death.

His Will was dated 6 January 1724/5, and was Proved on 11 March 1735/6 (P.C.C. 57 Derby).
