Biography

Son of John and Lydia N. (Norton) Howe, born in Canaan, Connecticut 22 April 1767. He married 21 Dec 1787, Esher Waller of Cornwall, Ct., born 21 March 1768 ;and died 27 Feb. 1822. John and Lydia had seven children. He married second, 13 Oct. 1822; Martha Barr. He died 16 March 1852.

According to some of his descendants, he with his brother Seth, and another brother, moved from Connecticut, prior to 1794, to Pennsylvania., and acquired a large tract of land on the site of the present city of Scranton, and erected a saw mill, grist mill, etc. In June 1810, John and his family removed from Scranton to the State of New York, traveling by means of two ox teams, his wife riding the entire distance on horseback. The trip occupied thirteen days and ended at Byron, Genesee Co. On July 12 he settled in Batavia (now East Elba) where he built the first log house in that vicinity, and began farming on a farm that cost $3.50 per acre.- His first crop of wheat, covering one acre, yielded 30 bushels. Of this he took the first grist on horseback to LeRoy, fifteen mile distant, to have it ground.

John was accompanied, or shortly followed, to East Elba by his brother Seth. They were typical early Methodists. Their homes were the stopping places for the traveling preachers of that faith, and the first quarterly meetings were held there. The first class here was organized under the leadership of Marmaduke Pierce, with Joseph Waller, Seth and John Howe and their families as members.[1]
